How to Organize Holiday Decor Without Dreading Next Year

Holiday decor is one of those categories that can bring so much joy and so much chaos.

    The tree.

    The ornaments.

    The garland.

    The wreaths.

    The stockings.

    The wrapping paper.

    The lights.

    The candles.

    The holiday dishes.

    The sentimental pieces.

    The kids' decorations.

    The outdoor decor.

    The table settings.

    The bins.

    So many bins.

And somehow, every year, a lot of people find themselves standing in the garage, basement, or storage room thinking:

Where is the thing I need?

Why are half the lights broken?

Which tree does this go on?

Why is this ornament wrapped in a grocery bag?

Why do we have seven bins labeled "Christmas" and none of them make sense?

Why did I not organize this better last year?

If that sounds familiar, you are not alone.

At Organize Joy, we help families and homeowners throughout Utah organize seasonal decor, storage rooms, garages, basements, pantries, closets, and full homes. We serve clients in Riverton, Draper, South Jordan, Herriman, Lehi, Highland, Alpine, Sandy, Holladay, Salt Lake City, Park City, Heber, Midway, and surrounding areas.

And one of the best gifts you can give yourself in December is an organized holiday decor system for next year.

Because the way you put things away this year determines how you feel when you pull them out next year.

That is the part most people forget.

    Everyone thinks about decorating.

Very few people think about undecorating.

    But the takedown matters.

If everything gets thrown into random bins because everyone is tired, next year starts with frustration.

If the lights are tangled, the ornaments are mixed, the stockings are missing, and the garland is shoved wherever it fits, decorating becomes harder than it needs to be.

A good holiday decor system makes both setup and takedown easier.

The first step is to edit before you store.

    This is huge.

    Do not store broken decor.

Do not store lights that do not work.

Do not store ornaments you no longer love.

Do not store items you skipped putting out for the third year in a row unless they are truly sentimental.

Do not store damaged wreaths, half-used wrapping supplies, or decor that does not fit your home anymore.

    Ask yourself:

Did I use this this year?

    Do I love this?

    Is this broken?

Does this fit the way we decorate now?

Would I be excited to see this next year?

Is this worth storing for another full year?

    Those questions help create clarity.

Holiday decor can grow quickly because we add to it little by little every year.

    A few ornaments.

    A few gifts.

    A new wreath.

    New ribbon.

    New lights.

    New wrapping paper.

    New holiday dishes.

Before long, the storage area is packed, but the items you actually love are buried.

Editing makes the whole system easier.

The second step is to categorize.

Instead of throwing everything into bins labeled "Christmas," create specific categories.

    Tree ornaments.

    Tree lights.

    Tree skirt and topper.

    Garland.

    Wreaths.

    Mantel decor.

    Kitchen decor.

    Holiday dishes.

    Tabletop decor.

    Outdoor lights.

    Wrapping supplies.

    Stockings.

    Christmas books.

    Kids' items.

    Sentimental decor.

    Guest room holiday items.

If you decorate multiple trees, consider organizing by tree.

    Main tree.

    Kids' tree.

    Basement tree.

    Bedroom tree.

    Office tree.

Each tree can have its own bin or labeled section.

That way, next year you are not sorting through every ornament in the house just to find the ones for one tree.

The third step is to use the right containers.

    This matters.

Holiday decor often includes fragile, bulky, awkward, or oddly shaped items.

Ornament storage boxes can protect special pieces.

Wreath bags can keep wreaths from getting crushed.

Wrapping paper containers can keep rolls together.

Clear bins can help you see what is inside.

Matching bins can make storage spaces feel calmer.

But the product should match the system.

At Organize Joy, we always say product should support the way you live.

Do not buy bins first and hope they solve the problem.

    Sort first.

    Edit first.

    Categorize first.

    Then choose the product.

The fourth step is to label everything clearly.

Labels are what make the system easy to use next year.

    Not vague labels.

    Helpful labels.

Instead of "Christmas," write "Christmas tree ornaments," "mantel garland," "outdoor lights," "gift wrap," or "holiday dishes."

The more specific the label, the easier the setup.

This is especially helpful if you have a housekeeper, assistant, family member, spouse, older kids, or organizing team helping with holiday setup or takedown.

A good label lets someone else help without needing you to explain every single thing.

    That is a gift.

The fifth step is to store items based on how you use them.

If you decorate early, keep the main decor easiest to access.

If outdoor lights go up first, make sure they are not buried.

If wrapping supplies are used throughout December, store them somewhere accessible.

If sentimental pieces are delicate, give them a safe protected space.

If certain items are only used once a year, they can go higher or farther back.

    Good organization considers timing.

It is not just about what you own.

It is about when and how you use it.

When holiday decor is organized well, the whole season feels lighter.

    Decorating is faster.

    Cleanup is easier.

The storage room stays more functional.

You stop rebuying things you already have.

The items you love are easier to enjoy.

And next year, you do not start the season already frustrated.

That is what good systems do.

    They support future you.

At Organize Joy, we believe your home should support the life you want to live in every season.

    That includes the holidays.
