How to Start Organizing Your Home When You Are Overwhelmed
One of the biggest questions we get is: 'Where do I even start?'
When your home feels heavy, when the closets are overflowing, when the garage is a dumping ground, and when the pantry makes you want to close the door and walk away, the overwhelm is real.
But here is the truth: You do not have to start with the whole house.
In fact, you shouldn't.
At Organize Joy, we work with clients throughout Utah, including Riverton, Draper, South Jordan, Herriman, Lehi, Highland, Alpine, Sandy, Holladay, Salt Lake City, Park City, Heber, Midway, and surrounding areas. We see overwhelm every single day.
And the way out is always the same: Small, intentional steps.
The first step is to pick one small win.
Don't pick the garage. Don't pick the storage room. Don't pick the basement.
Pick a drawer. Pick a shelf. Pick the junk drawer in the kitchen. Pick the medicine cabinet. Pick the space that you use every single day that causes you a tiny bit of friction.
When you finish that small space, your brain gets a hit of dopamine. You realize that order is possible. You see that you can make decisions. You feel the relief of knowing exactly where the batteries or the band-aids are.
That small win creates momentum.
The second step is to pull everything out.
You cannot organize what you cannot see. When you pull everything out, you are forced to look at every single item. You see the duplicates. You see the things that are broken. You see the things you forgot you even owned.
The third step is to sort by category.
Group like with like. Don't worry about where things go yet. Just group them. All the pens together. All the charging cords together. All the snacks together. All the tools together.
The fourth step is the edit.
This is where the magic happens. Ask yourself: 'Does this support the life I am living now?' If the answer is no, let it go. We believe you cannot create space for what you want until you create space by letting go of what no longer serves you.
The fifth step is to create a home for what stays.
Give each category a destination. Use containers if they help, but remember that containers support the system—they are not the system itself. Label clearly so everyone in the home knows the decision has been made.
Organizing is not about perfection. It is about reducing friction.
It is about making your home a place that supports you instead of a place that drains you.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, you do not have to figure it out alone. Organize Joy is here to help you move from chaos to clarity, one space at a time.
Whether you need help with a single closet or a full-home transformation, our team brings a judgment-free, white-glove approach to every project.
Because you deserve a home that lets you breathe.
